Is grass-fed beef good for the climate?

Besvaret 26. oktober 2026

Usually no better than other beef, and often worse, per kilo. An analysis of 100 beef production systems in 16 countries found that cattle finished on pasture had 20 percent higher production emissions than grain-finished cattle, and a 42 percent bigger footprint once soil carbon and the carbon the land could store as natural vegetation were counted. Grazing can store carbon in soil, but a review from a University of Oxford research network estimates this offsets only 20-60 percent of emissions from grazing ruminants such as cattle and sheep. A US modelling study found that making all American beef grass-fed would need more cattle and raise methane from their digestion by 43 percent. More broadly, animal products can have far bigger impacts than plant-based substitutes, however they are produced.

The sources have no Danish figures for grass-fed beef.
